NHL Height and Position Study
Overview
This project asks a predictive question: how much do player characteristics help explain differences in height among NHL players? The answer is that position is associated with meaningful height differences, and a richer multivariable model using thousands of players and more than 10 covariates shows that weight, draft status, and other variables also matter.

The histogram below shows the overall spread of player heights and where most values are concentrated.
This histogram shows how player heights are distributed across the sample, with the outcome measured in centimeters. The main covariate of interest is position group, and the figure helps show where most players fall in the overall height distribution while setting up the broader question of whether position is associated with height differences.
Why this matters
Height can shape a player’s role, reach, and style of play. In hockey, that can influence defensive coverage, puck battles, and how players match up against one another.
